The Nigerian singer-songwriter, Burna Boy, was born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt City, Nigeria. He started producing music when he was ten years old. After graduating from college, Burna relocated to London to attend university. After two years, he dropped out and moved back to Nigeria to pursue his passion. A creative by the name of LeriQ allocated studio space for Burna to record and produce. His father always listened to reggae and dancehall music, so this is where his early influence and music styles stems from. LeriQ and Burna produced a track titled “Prefer to Party” which initiated his rise to prominence on a national and international level.

Burna is among contemporary African music’s brightest stars and creator of an enigmatic new genre he simply dubs “Afrofusion.” He made his Coachella debut in 2019. He is the 2021 winner of the Best World Music album Category at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for his fifth studio album: Twice As Tall. Burna Boy won his fourth Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2023. His song “Sittin’ on Top of the World” received a nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, where he performed the song live.
