Musical encounter between Africa and First Nations – February 26, 2021 LiveEvents February 19, 2021 790 A musical encounter between Africa and First Nations In its 30th year celebrating Black History Month, Productions Nuits d’Afrique is proud to present a spectacular evening of virtual concerts featuring a musical union between ancestral African and First Nations cultures. Performances by Djely Tapa, Anachnid and Mi’gmafrica will be webcast Live, free of charge, on Facebook @nuitsdafrique, Friday, February 26, 2021, at 8 pm. A Musical Encounter Between Africa and First Nations will be recorded live at Le National and hosted by one of Quebec’s best-known cultural commentators in the arts world, Francine Grimaldi. In what is sure to be a highlight of the evening, Djely Tapa, a Griot originally from Mali and Anachnid, a multidisciplinary artist of Oji-Cree heritage, representing rich cultures from two distant continents, will combine their enchanting voices as they merge traditional music with contemporary and electronic sounds. Mi’gmafrica, born out of an encounter between Manding and Mi’gmaq cultures, will kick off the evening and get everyone moving to rhythms, melodies and songs that are deeply rooted in Mother Earth and the spirit of the ancestors of these two continents. Mi’gmafrica brings together several musicians, including Sadio Sissokho, esteemed Griot from Senegal, and Valérie Ivy Hamelin, musical artist from the Mi’gmaq Gespeg First Nation of the Gaspé Peninsula, to offer the listener innovative music that reflects both cultures.
