In his sonatas for piano and cello, the two instruments perform as equal partners, as they do in the sonata by Saint-Saëns. In Duparc’s sonata, the composer’s only chamber music work, hints of the sublime vocal melodies he would later go on to write can be perceived. The latter genre also found in Fauré an excellent proponent.
