An Amazing Story of Evolution at Its Most Beautiful

Starting February 28, 2019, Space for Life invites everyone to come enjoy Butterflies Go Free in the Jardin botanique’s majestic greenhouse. This year, visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the fabulous evolutionary history of these masterpieces of nature as they fall under the spell of the butterflies’ beauty. Over the course of 200 million years, butterflies have developed a variety of adaptations in response to biological and environmental imperatives. Inside the greenhouse, where it’s nice and warm, young and old alike will be enchanted by Butterflies Go Free, the Insectarium and Jardin botanique’s flagship event.

Shimmering colours, seductive scents, inviting dances — butterflies use every trick in the book to attract a mate! But behind their many charms lie complex evolutionary processes that have been going on for millennia to ensure the survival of the species.

Gradually, over their millions of years of evolution, butterflies have diversified tremendously. Many have developed striking colours, fabulous patterns and iridescence on their wings to adapt to their environment and help them survive.

The Insectarium’s science educators will be waiting for you in the main exhibition greenhouse at the Jardin botanique to show you how and why biological evolution has resulted in such a extraordinary masterpieces. Note that Space for Life will be exploring the exceptional history of evolution in its year-long programming.
