Horns Galore! – February 19, Maison Symphonique LiveEvents February 12, 2015 3984 Kent Nagano, conductor John Zirbel, horn Denys Derome, horn Catherine Turner, horn Nadia Côté, horn Richard Robert, violin Timothy Hutchins, flute Olga Gross, harpsichord Presentation of Horns Galore! Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, BWV 1050 (approx. 21 min.) Schumann, Konzertstück for four horns in F major, Op. 86 (approx. 21 min.) Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 107 (Reformation) (approx. 27 min.) Music lovers rarely get to hear the horn as a solo instrument in a concert. So what’s to be said when the entire OSM horn section comes to the front of the stage? Such will be the case when four horn players perform Schumann’s Konzertstück, a work composed about the time as the Piano Concerto and employing the newly-developed valve horn. This meaty, all-German program includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, the first keyboard concerto in music history, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 (Reformation), written as part of the festivities surrounding the three hundredth anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 1830.
