18th Century Public Market

A weekend in the heart of New France!
A major summertime event, the Public Market is back for its 31st edition! This incredible reenactment—recreating the atmosphere of a market day in Montréal during the French Regime—is brought to life by a host of authentic characters and features a range of captivating activities. In the Museum’s forecourt and on neighbouring streets, stroll among the stalls manned by merchants and craftspeople, learn about traditional Indigenous know-how and trades of the past, and join in the revelry showcasing the era’s music and dance. It all takes place in a festive ambience that will whisk you back to the 18th century, right in the heart of Old Montreal!

Explore trades of the past
Come meet the craftspeople you would see at a market in the 18th century. A stone mason, weaver, cooper, pit sawyer, and wood turner will enthusiastically tell you all about their occupations!

Age-old Indigenous traditions and know-how
In the 18th century, the market was an important site for encounters and trade between Indigenous people and the French. In the Market’s contemporary zone, come meet a new generation of Indigenous craftspeople who are working to carry on their ancestral practices. See demonstrations of traditional music and dance, hear songs and stories, and learn how dreamcatchers are made. A rich and invaluable heritage!

Activities, games, and workshops for young and old alike
During the French Regime, noblemen, peasants, musicians, villagers, sailors, soldiers, and even pirates crossed paths at the marketplace! There was also a military encampment on the site. See marches and live-fire exercises, get an introduction to fencing, learn how to tie sailors’ knots, and defend your position in a giant naval battle game. Plenty of other activities await you too!

Beer brewed especially for Pointe-à-Callière
BreWskey artisanal brewery (Old Montréal) has created a beer named Pinte-à-Callière. Come taste it at the Market inn!
