A call to exploration, this program creates a fascinating world in which various musical traditions are echoed in the sounds of today. Enjoy this epic journey with the OktoEcho ensemble! Oktoecho explores musical landscapes and sounds from Middle Eastern, North American Indigenous and Western European musical expressions through original compositions, under the artistic direction of composer Katia Makdissi-Warren (winner of the Betty Webster Award) and Inuit throat singer Lydia Etok. Oktoecho is an ensemble whose numbers vary (from 3 to 30 musicians) and has been ensemble-in-residence at the Maison de la Culture Ahuntsic since 2010. In Canada, Oktoecho performs at various festivals. Internationally, the ensemble has toured in Spain, Lebanon, Morocco with Les Violons du Roy, France with concerts and workshops, and in Chile and Colombia. The ensemble received the OPUS Award for Inclusion and Diversity in 2020. In 2022, Oktoecho was awarded its first ADISQ nomination for the album Transcestral and won 3 silver medals at the Global Music Award. In 2023, Transcestral was laureate of the Oliver Schroer Music Innovation Award from the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Since its creation, the Virée has become an unmissable summer event. The mission of the Virée classique is to promote the discovery of music in all its forms, to strengthen social ties in the community, to contribute to the development of the sensitivity and curiosity of music lovers, and to encourage amateur musicians and young emerging artists. This mission has been fulfilled successfully year after year. For this 10th edition, 26 indoor concerts and a hundred or so free activities for the whole family will allow you to explore a multitude of musical universes, from the great classical works to Balinese music, as well as jazz, film music, music from the Balkans or the Middle East.
