Musicians of the OSM : A Multitude of Quartet Colours

The Musicians of the OSM pursue their collaboration with Bourgie Hall in an eclectic and rarely heard program for string quartet.

Artists
Olivier Thouin, violin

Olivier Thouin is one of Quebec’s most respected musicians, appearing as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He won the Prix d’Europe Competition in 1997 and received the Young Canadian Musicians Award in 2002. As a soloist, he has appeared with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre Métropolitain, Les Violons du Roy, McGill Chamber Orchestra, and I Musici de Montréal. In addition to performing chamber music with such artists as Anton Kuerti, Marc-André Hamelin, and Emanuel Ax, Thouin has given live performances of the complete cycles of the Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, and Fauré sonatas. He was Associate Concertmaster of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa for two years and taught at McGill University. He is now Associate Concertmaster of the OSM and plays a 1754 Michele Deconet violin, on loan from Canimex.

Jean-Sébastien Roy, violin

An OSM musician since September 2015, Jean-Sébastien Roy is recognized as one of the most gifted Canadian violinists of his generation. Concertmaster of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2015, he was also Principal Guest Concertmaster of the Royal Swedish Opera during the winter of 2015. Winner of the Prix d’Europe in 2006, from 2006 to 2009, Roy was loaned the 1717 “Windsor-Weinstein” Stradivarius violin by the Canada Council for the Arts. He has also appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, and Orchestre Métropolitain.

Charles Pilon, viola

Charles Pilon has been a member of the OSM since July 2016. Prior to this, he was Assistant Principal Viola of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to 2016 and a violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra, Ontario from 2004 to 2005. Pilon started out as a violinist, and obtained his bachelor’s degree at McGill University under the tutelage of Sonia Jelinkova and Mauricio Fuks before pursuing further studies with Robert Lipsett at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Pilon has also studied viola with Thomas Riebl from the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. He is a former member of the University of Alberta String Quartet, with whom he performed an average of 30 concerts per season, covering a vast repertoire. Pilon has performed as a soloist with the Alberta Baroque Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton, Ontario.

Sylvain Murray, cello

Sylvain Murray studied at the Conservatoire de musique in his hometown of Chicoutimi before continuing his studies at McGill University with Antonio Lysy. From 2003 to 2007, he was a member of Les Violons du Roy, with whom he toured Europe, the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As a soloist, Murray has performed with the Orchestre symphonique du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de la Montérégie, and Les Violons du Roy. In Italy, he participated in the Festival dei Due Mondi and the Festival della Valle d’Itria. A well-regarded chamber musician, Murray has performed at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Rendez-vous musical de Laterrière, Festival de Lanaudière, Orford Festival, with Pro Musica, Musica Camerata Montréal, and Société de musique de chambre de Québec. Sylvain Murray currently plays a cello by Domenico Montagnana made in 1734 and uses a c. 1950 Louis Gillet bow, both generously loaned to him by Canimex.
