VIENNA AND PARIS 1900

In 1899, the year of Ernest Chausson’s death, Arnold Schoenberg completed his Transfigured Night, an expressionist work whose instrumentation was highly innovative for its time. While Chausson marked the close of the old century with a resolutely Romantic concertante composition, Schoenberg was already at work on an entirely new musical language.
