Another side of Chick Corea – February 6, 2025 LiveEvents January 27, 2025 163 Bourgie Hall presents Another side of Chick Corea Discover the music of the great jazzman Chick Corea in a completely new light, through the works he wrote for various classical chamber music ensembles, including his monumental Septet. Artists Claire Marchand, flute Claire Marchand is one of the most sought-after flutist in Québec. Acclaimed by the critics for her subtlety of colours, technique and magnificently balanced virtuosity, she has appeared as a soloist in numerous concerts, recitals and chamber music ensembles. She studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Gail Grimstead where she obtained degrees in flute and chamber music. Claire Marchand also studied with flutist Patrick Gallois in Paris, as well as Pierre-Yves Artaud, with whom she received Premiers Prix by unanimous decision in flute and chamber music. She attended various advanced courses and seminars, including at IRCAM in Paris and Mozarteum in Salzburg. She also participated in many master classes with Alain Marion, Andras Adorjan, Ransom Wilson and Aurèle Nicolet. She was awarded a grant from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec to study extended techniques on flute with Robert Dick in New York and in a stage with Mario Carol in Strasbourg. Claire maintains an active schedule as a soloist, chamber musician and professor. She has taught at McGill University’s Conservatory of Music Schulich School of Music for 18 years and is now actively involved in teaching the flute at her studio in Montreal. Claire Marchand is currently the Executive Director and Artistic Director of the Canadian Music Center in Quebec since 2015. Gabriel Trottier, horn Gabriel Trottier is a solo, chamber and orchestral horn player who performs baroque to new music on modern and historical instruments. In addition, he initiates the commissioning of new works and participates in interdisciplinary projects that bring together music with other art forms, including theater and visual arts. Currently a member of Ensemble Tesse, Gabriel Trottier also frequently works with the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec as well as many orchestras and ensembles in the province. Internationally, he has worked with the Ensemble intercontemporain, the woodwind quintet Le Concert Impromptu (Paris) and the Oslo Sinfonietta, among others. A graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music (M. Mus 2016) and the University of Montreal (D. Mus 2021), he studied under the tutelage of Frøydis Ree Wekre, Julius Pranevicius, Saar Berger and Louis-Philippe Marsolais. Specializing in contemporary music performance, he was a fellow at the International Ensemble Modern Academy (M. Mus 2018) in Germany and is an alumnus of the Lucerne Festival Academy. His work has been supported by The Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Sylva- Gelber Music Foundation. Matt Herskowitz, piano Uniquely combining the superlative technique of a classical virtuoso with his prowess in jazz, world music and free improvisation, pianist, composer and arranger Matt Herskowitz has carved out a unique and personal voice in music. Over the course of the last decade, Matt has produced a series of critically-acclaimed recordings, premiered his works in settings from New York’s Central Park to Germany’s Köln Philharmonie, collaborated with top classical, jazz and pop artists, and has performed at music festivals across the globe Andara Quartet Richard Zheng, violin Richard Zheng is a violinist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in the first violin section. He is also occasionally guest concertmaster with the FILMHarmonique Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique et Chœur des Mélomanes and the Société Philharmonique de Montréal. Richard holds a Bachelor of Performance and an Artist Diploma from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in the class of Anne Robert. He earned a Master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with Andrés Cárdenes. Jeanne Côté, violin A native of Sherbrooke, young violinist Jeanne Côté stands out for the sensitivity of her playing. She is a founding member of the Andara String Quartet, the junior ensemble in residence at the Université de Montréal. Besides her great devotion to chamber music, the young violinist has a great interest in new music and music research. She is a member of a research team for the ACTOR Project, which is investigating musician’s sense of perception. Jeanne loves to share her passion for music through teaching. She currently teaches violin at the Coopérative des professeurs de musique de Montréal, as well as at the Joseph-François-Perrault school. In the fall of 2020, she co-founded Les Apprentis de la Musique Improvisée, an organization that offers improvisation workshops for youth. She received her Master’s degree from McGill University, in the class of Axel Strauss and holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in the class of Johanne Arel. Vincent Delorme, viola Originally from Chambly, Vincent Delorme completed his master’s degree at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, where he received prizes in viola and chamber music, as well as the lieutenant-governor’s medal for his remarkable school and community involvement. Teachers such as Jocelyne Bastien on the viola, Denis Brott in chamber music and Éric Lagacé in jazz are the basis of his bubbling artistic inspirations, which have also been enriched by occasional courses and master classes with international violists such as as Antoine Tamestit, James Dunham and Atar Arad. Passionate about chamber music, Vincent is a founding member of the Andara quartet, a formation with which he takes part as much in the Quebec music scene as in multiple residences, seminars and international festivals, benefiting on these occasions from the teachings of European and American masters such as as Johannes Meissl, Mathieu Erzog, the members of the Cuartetto Quiroga, the St-Lawrence String Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet and so many others. Currently, Vincent is more involved than ever in transmitting music to all audiences, and the timeless and concrete messages it contains, through various entrepreneurial projects such as the Andara Quartet, the Jazz Minouches Trio, the social circus, teaching, poetry and composition. He also holds positions in several orchestras in Quebec, including that of solo viola and artistic advisor to the Ensemble Volte. Justine Lefebvre, cello Justine is currently completing her Master’s degree with Carole Sirois at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. She made her solo debut at the Maison Symphonique de Montréal in the fall of 2022 with the Orchestre Symphonique du Conservatoire. Justine has been a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra since 2022 and the Orchestre Symphonique de Drummondville since 2023. She is also an additional musician for several ensembles, including the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Orchestre Symphonique de Trois-Rivières. She has honed her orchestral training in recent months through mentorship programs at the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Les Violons du Roy. Since the winter of 2022, she has been the principal cello at the Orchestre Symphonique du Conservatoire de Montréal.
