Aleko – Triple Forte

The Jewish song on which Copland’s Trio is based comes from Vitebsk, Chagall’s place of birth. The Elegy that follows is by Russian Jewish composer Alexander Krein, and Tchaikovsky’s elegiac Trio was choreographed by Massine in 1942 for the ballet Aleko, for which Chagall designed the set and costumes.
