Take part in the famed Cinco de Mayo celebrations and savour Mexico’s fiery music with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Québec, under the baton of guest conductor Francisco Javier Gutiérrez, featuring Alexandre Da Costa’s flaming violin and the bewitching tenor voice of Antonio Figueroa, who will be also accompanied by mariachis! Come share in the passion of this flamboyant culture through symphonic works like Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 as well as songs by the legendary Luis Miguel. Delight in hearing Alexandre Da Costa’s rendition of Fire and Blood by Michael Daugherty, a piece that draws inspiration from various sources including the monumental paintings of Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Also note that Alexandre Da Costa has won a Juno in 2012 for his interpretation of the piece. Artists Francisco Javier Gutiérrez, guest conductor Born in Guillena, but currently living in Villanueva del Ariscal, near Seville (Spain), Francisco Javier Gutiérrez Juan is one of the leading international Spanish conductors. He stands out on account of his versatility as a conductor of important orchestras and professional symphonic orchestras and bands in Europe and America, and is known for tackling all types of genres, ranging from opera to jazz, without forgetting the great symphonic classics, operetta, flamenco, copla (Spanish folk songs), pop, studio recordings, radio and television work, premieres, among other work. He is currently the chief Director of the Municipal Symphonic Band of Seville Alexandre Da Costa, violin Sony Classical artist, Juno Award winner, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Québec and Principal Guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes, Alexandre Da Costa was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He showed an uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age. By the age of nine, he had the astonishing ability to perform his first concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments, which brought him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career as a violinist began very early and, after encouragement from Charles Dutoit, he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as well as in recital. Winner of many national and international first prizes, including the International Violin Competition Pablo Sarasate, Alexandre Da Costa has given close to two thousand concerts and recitals throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Antonio Figueroa, tenor Originally from Montréal, tenor Antonio Figueroa began his career with the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. His numerous awards include, notably, the International Vocal Art Institute’s Silverman Prize, awarded for his performance of Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). His successful debut in the role of Nadir (Les pêcheurs de perles) at the Opéra d’Avignon led to further European engagements: with the Opéra Comique, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Capitole de Toulouse; in Liège and Lausanne; and at the Theater an der Wien. As well as developing his career across the Atlantic, he has performed with Pacific Opera, and with opera companies in Québec, Montréal, and Ottawa. After graduating from the Université de Montréal, he returned there in 2020 to work on his doctorate.
