Todd CopeMusicians of the OSM – Duo to Quintet – March 3, 2023 LiveEvents February 26, 2023 709 Bourgie Hall in collaboration with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal present Musicians of the OSM – Duo to Quintet More than two hundred years separate Mikhail Glinka, who wrote his Trio pathétique when Beethoven was still alive, and Sofia Gubaidulina, the present-day grande dame of new music. Between these two temporal poles, musicians of the OSM perform a kaleidoscope of Russian Romantic works by Ippolitov-Ivanov, Glazunov, and Rimsky-Korsakov, in different instrumental combinations ranging from duo to quintet. Artists Albert Brouwer, flute Albert Brouwer was initiated to music playing in a wind ensemble at Amersfoort, Netherlands. Subsequently, he studied with Abbie de Quant at the Utrecht Conservatory, then at McGill University with Timothy Hutchins, now his regular colleague at the OSM. It was under the baton of Charles Dutoit, performing Mahler’s Symphony no. 8, “Of a Thousand” that he joined the ranks of the Orchestra. Other than his position with the OSM. Todd Cope, clarinet Todd Cope studied with Yehuda Gilad at the Colburn Conservatory and with Richie Hawley at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory. After holding positions with the New World Symphony and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, he joined the OSM in 2014. He currently teaches at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and is an exclusive artist for Buffet Crampon and Vandoren. Stéphane Lévesque, bassoon Stéphane Lévesque began studying music in elementary school at École Le Plateau and continued his training at Joseph-François-Perrault High School. He remembers the moment he decided to become a musician, in grade 11. He went on to study in the classes of Rodolfo Masella, Stephen Maxym and Frank Morelli. One of his fondest memories dates back to 1994: his first concert at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York. Two years earlier, he had given his first performance with the OSM in a Vienna-themed concert under the direction of Georg Tintner. Florence Rousseau, French horn Vanessa Marcoux holds a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from McGill University as well as a Master’s degree in violin from the University of Montreal. She also perfected her training at the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon (France). She then pursued a second bachelor’s degree to study instrumental composition with Ana Sokolovic. Throughout her studies as a violinist and composer, she has received numerous grants and awards and is now performing regularly as a soloist and a chamber musician in an array of musical activities ranging from classical and contemporary music to world music, jazz and improvisation. As a soloist, she has been heard with ensembles such as the McGill Chamber Orchestra (2014) and the Orchestre Métropolitain (2016). She has also toured extensively with the Juno-nominated Klezmer band Oktopus, and her improvisation skills have led her to work with many other renowned Montreal-based ensembles. Stéphane Lemelin, piano Stéphane Lemelin studied with Yvonne Hubert in Montreal, Karl-Ulrich Schnabel in New York, and received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University, where his teachers were Boris Berman and Claude Frank. He taught at the University of Alberta for more than ten years and at University of Ottawa from 2001 to 2013. While there, he served as Director of the School of Music from 2007 to 2012. He has been appointed Professor of Piano and Chair of the Department of Performance at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University starting May 2014.
