Mathieu Gaudet

This program testifies to the immense admiration Schubert held for Beethoven, and how Beethoven’s compositional innovations influenced the younger composer’s piano works. The monumental C minor sonata, the first tableau of the celebrated 1828 triptych, a work at once tragic and epic, remains to this day an absolute masterpiece of the piano literature.

A versatile, passionate musician, Mathieu Gaudet has pursued a remarkable career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor for the past twenty years. He commands a vast repertoire of works and has performed across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. His concerts and recordings are regularly broadcast on the French and English services of the CBC.

In high demand as a chamber musician, he has collaborated with numerous soloists and ensembles, including Suzie Leblanc, Jean-Sébastien Roy, the Arthur-Leblanc quartet and the Pentaedre wind quintet, as well as various ensembles made up of First Chairs of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Orchestre Métropolitain.

Recognized for his talent as a pedagogue, Mathieu Gaudet has taught at the University of Ottawa and the Montreal Music Conservatory. His other teaching activities include numerous master classes. Mathieu Gaudet obtained the Master of Music degree from the prestigious Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he studied with Julian Martin, subsequently perfecting his training with Leon Fleisher. He was invited to enter the Juilliard School in New York as a doctoral candidate but opted instead for the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Back in Canada, he completed his musical training with Marc Durand, André Laplante, and John Perry. In 2007 he graduated Doctor of Music in Performance from the Faculty of Music of Université de Montréal under Paul Stewart. In 2008, he added to his academic achievements a master’s degree in orchestral conducting with Jean-François Rivest.
