The Hunchback of Notre Dame: the Movie

Enjoy the world premiere of Quebec composer Gabriel Thibaudeau’s music to Wallace Worsley’s 1923 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the famous novel by Victor Hugo. Lon Chaney stars unforgettably as Quasimodo, who is desperately in love with the beautiful Esmeralda. Be transported to the film’s spectacular Romanesque setting along with musicians of the OSM and Organist-in-Residence Jean-Willy Kunz.

Gabriel Thibaudeau, Composer and conductor

Born in 1959 the Canadian composer, pianist and conductor Gabriel Thibaudeau studied piano in Montreal at the Vincent D’Indy music school and composition at l’Université de Montréal. He started work at the age of 15 as a pianist for ballets. Since then, he has been a pianist for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, appointed pianist at La Cinémathèque Québécoise for the last 30 years and the composer in residence with L’Octuor de France for more than 20 years. Thibaudeau’s work includes music for ballets, the opera, chamber music and several orchestral compositions for silent films. His works are performed in the Americas, as well as in Europe and Asia. Several international institutions have commissioned work from Mr. Thibaudeau, among them: Le Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Cineteca di Bologna, Le Festival de Cannes, the National Gallery in Washington, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Jean-Willy Kunz, OSM organist-in-residence

Jean-Willy Kunz is the first Organist-in-Residence of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. In addition to performances with the Orchestra and as a soloist in recital, he supervises the development and showcasing of the OSM’s Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique at the Maison symphonique de Montréal. His most recent performances include concerts with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Violons du Roy, with saxophonist Branford Marsalis, and with singer-songwriters Pierre Lapointe, Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright. A significant portion of his discography reflects multiple musical influences: Symphonie et créations pour orgue et orchestre, with the OSM (2016 Juno Award-winning album) ; Impressions for organ, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, double bass and percussions; Punkt, with Pierre Lapointe and André Gagnon Baroque, for harpsichord and symphony orchestra. Jean-Willy Kunz is Professor of Organ at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and Artistic Director of the Canadian International Organ Competition.

Andréanne Brisson Paquin, soprano

Hailed for her generous stage presence and expressive voice, Montreal-born soprano Andréanne Brisson Paquin is equally devoted to several different musical genres, singing baroque, classical, operatic and even contemporary repertoire with the same commitment, rigour, and excitement.

Andréanne has sung with many of the great chamber music and baroque ensembles, including montreal based I Musici, Pallade Musica, Arion, Ensemble Caprice, Voix humaines and also Musica Angelica (Los Angeles), Musica and Rhenum (Amsterdam), Ensemble Masques (Paris), Ensemble Odyssee (Amsterdam), with whom she recorded a debut recording (Serenate Napoletane, PanClassic) She was heard at Festival de Lanaudière, Lufthansa Baroque Festival, Berliner Tage für Alte Musik, Festival de musique baroque de Pontoise, Festival Classica, Montréal Baroque, Festival Bach and Festival Classica. She has worked with conductors and instrumentalists such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jory Vinikour, Jed Wentz, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Lorenzo Coppola, Martin Haselbock, Nicolas Ellis, and performed with Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montreal, Grand Ballets de Montreal Orchestra and Orchestre de l’Agora.
