As part of the OFF Jazz Festival

Rafael Zaldivar’s Afro-Cuban Revival

For the OFF Jazz festival, pianist and composer Rafael Zaldivar launches his Afro-Cuban Revival, concert presented by the Bourgie Hall. Zaldivar recreates that distinct Cuban sound where you’ll find jazz roots and the rhythmic spirituality of his native country, Cuba. Listen for his mastery of the blues and his dextrous shift to contemporary Latin jazz. He’s joined by the percussionist and singer Amado Dedeu Garcia, singer Sarah Rossy, bassist Levi Dover and drummer Louis-Vincent Hamel.

Levi Dover, double bass

Born in 1990 in Montreal, Levi Dover’s musical trajectory began on the electric bass at a young age. As his passion for music deepened, he went on to receive formal musical training, eventually becoming immersed in the tradition of jazz double bass and studying at McGill University in Montreal. He has since established himself as a strong supportive voice on the double bass, with an approach that is both grounded and forward-thinking.

Levi plays in the Gentiane MG Trio, recipient of the 2018 Révelation Radio-Canada Award, and the Prix François-Marcaurelle de la GMMQ. They have toured across Canada and in Mexico. His reputation as a solid accompanist with an original voice on the double bass also led to him joining award-winning pianist Emie R Roussel in her trio for a tour in Japan in 2016. He has shared the stage with such musicians as Jean-Michel Pilc, Rafael Zaldivar, Rémi Bolduc, Jim Doxas, Kevin Dean, Joel Miller, Yannick Rieu and many others, both from Montreal and abroad.
