Northern Lights: Dalia Stasevska Conducts – April 27 to May 11, 2021 LiveEvents April 22, 2021 1535 Maison symphonique de Montréal presents Northern Lights: Dalia Stasevska Conducts Tchaikovsky and Sibelius Conductor Dalia Stasevska directs the OSM and offers two perspectives on the past of major composers. Tchaikovsky pays tribute to Mozart in his Variations on a Rococo Theme, which will be performed by cellist and 2019 OSM Competition winner Bryan Cheng. Sibelius, for his part, broke with Romanticism in his Symphony no. 3, which seeks a formal balance reminiscent of Classicism while maintaining an atmosphere of thoroughly Nordic serenity. Artists Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Dalia Stasevska, conductor Dalia Stasevska’s charismatic and dynamic musicianship has established her as a conductor of exceptional versatility. She will begin her term as Chief Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in 2021–2022 and currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Stasevska’s 2020–2021 season features debuts with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, Orchestre national de France, and Orchestre national de Belgique and return performances with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony and Swedish Chamber Orchestra, among others. Other recent engagements include the Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, NAC Ottawa and Detroit Symphony orchestras. A passionate opera conductor, her credits include productions with the Norske Opera, Kungliga Opera Stockholm, Opéra de Toulon, Finnish National Opera and at the 2018 Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm featuring acclaimed singer Anne-Sofie von Otter. Dalia studied violin and composition at the Tampere Conservatoire and conducting at the Sibelius Academy under Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. Bryan Cheng, cello The first cellist to win the Grand Prize of the OSM Competition (2019), and first-ever Canadian laureate of the prestigious Paulo International Cello Competition, at age 22 Bryan Cheng has secured a distinctive place in the world of classical music. He made his solo debut at age 10 with the Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal, his Carnegie Hall recital debut at age 14, and his Elbphilharmonie debut in 2018 with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Solo highlights of recent and upcoming seasons include appearances with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Panamá, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, and Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, as well as the Okanagan, Springfield, Adelphi, Niagara, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Lahti, and Schleswig- Holstein symphonies. He completed a coast-to-coast Canadian tour with the National Youth Orchestra as the 2017 Canada Council for the Arts Michael Measures Prize winner, and a summer 2020 residency with the Orchestra of the Americas, collaborating with such esteemed conductors as Matthias Pintscher, Susanna Mälkki, Peter Oundjian, Joshua Weilerstein, and Jonathan Darlington. As a member of the Cheng2 Duo and chamber musician, Bryan performs across the globe; the 2019–2020 season takes him to Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal’s Bourgie Hall, on a European tour of the Duo’s Beethoven 2020 project, Ludwig & Beyond, and to Russia’s Trans-Siberian Art Festival, Germany’s Kammermusikfestival Spannungen, Italy’s Trasimeno Festival, and Quebec’s Orford Musique, among others. He plays the c. 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello and c. 1830 Shaw Adam bow, generously loaned to him by the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank.
