Inspired by the myth of Orpheus, choreographer Alan Lake presents S’abreuver des volcans LiveEvents March 22, 2025 176 Danse Danse presents Alan Lake Factori(e) | S’abreuver des volcans Alan Lake delves into the heart of the human experience with his latest work, a poignant foray into the myth of Orpheus that testifies to the redemptive power of art. Photo: David Wong The myth of Orpheus has inspired artists since ancient times—sculptors, painters, poets, musicians and filmmakers. Choreographer Alan Lake follows in their footsteps with one of his signature symbolist tales. Subtly interweaving myth and modernity, this dance of light and shade explores the twists and turns of doubt, loss and, above all, life. In striking imagery that combines melody, movement, emotion and vulnerability, Lake constructs a supernatural atmosphere that oscillates between dream and reality. The work resonates as a powerful metaphor, reaffirming that the true essence of our humanity lies in facing the unknown. Choreographer Alan Lake founded Alan Lake Factori[e] in 2007, a multidisciplinary contemporary dance company based in Quebec City, where he developed his artistic approach at the crossroads of dance, film and the visual arts. In 2018, Lake joined the “Artiste Associé” program of the Centre de Création O Vertigo – CCOV (Montreal) and is also an associate artist of La Rotonde (Quebec City). He presents his work as a choreographer in Quebec, Canada, Belgium, Mexico and the United States. At the same time, Alan Lake regularly acts as guest choreographer and teacher at various Quebec institutions, including UQAM’s dance department, l’École de Danse de Québec and l’École de Danse Contemporaine de Montréal.
