Coded Dreams: A New Exhibition Entirely Dedicated to Artificial Intelligence

Coded Dreams explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and interactive art through two captivating experiences created by Marc Da Costa and Matthew Niederhauser. These works have been showcased at major festivals such as the Venice Biennale and South by Southwest (SXSW), and their presentation in Montreal marks a Canadian premiere. Coded Dreams is the PHI Centre’s first exhibition focused exclusively on artificial intelligence.

An Exhibition that Requires your Participation

Coded Dreams illuminates machine learning’s power to shape and reimagine our memories, dreams, and myths. As you explore virtual environments, intelligent algorithms transport you to unique worlds where your participation breathes life into personalized narratives. Coded Dreams showcases AI’s potential to create profound, personalized experiences and provides a moment to reflect on where this technology may be taking us.

The Experiences
Tulpamancer
Tulpamancer is a machine learning VR installation that questions the memories and potential fates of each visitor and then generates a unique experience that is destroyed after viewing. Tulpamancer explores what it means to share your life with a machine.

The Tulpa, an idea rooted in Tibetan Buddhism but popularized by the theosophical thinker Annie Besant, refers to the physical manifestation of thought through spiritual practice and intense concentration. The Tulpa was a way of making sense of and providing alternative frames for modernity and how we may encounter ourselves – thus providing participants an occasion to imagine new histories and futures through AI.

The Golden Key
The Golden Key is an immersive installation that invites audiences to contribute to a never-ending folktale generated by an imagined AI artifact from a future world, allowing them to explore these technologies through a shared creative act.

By combining audience input with an AI model trained on tens of thousands of folktales from around the world, The Golden Key seeks to give visitors agency to understand how these emerging technologies function and also the power to collectively shape new narratives as they imagine alternative futures together. The work won the Jury Award in the SXSW Festival XR Experience Exhibition this year.
