The performance opens with Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, conducted by Jean-Sébastien Vallée. Duruflé’s lush harmonies and serene melodies create a deeply spiritual reflection on life and eternity, brought to life by the 140 combined voices of the Schulich choirs and 94 instrumentalists. Following this, Alexis Hauser takes the podium to lead the orchestra in Arnold Schoenberg’s Theme and variations, opus 43b. A brilliant example of Schoenberg’s later tonal period, this work fuses rich orchestral textures with rhythmic complexity. The concert culminates with Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, one of the most enduring orchestral masterpieces.
