Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal presents

KOKOROKO

KOKOROKO are a young, London based Afrobeat 8-Piece band led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, playing a fusion of Jazz and Afrobeat. In February 2019 they were named “ones to watch” by the Guardian, after their track “Abusey Junction” garnered 57 million views on YouTube. In February 2020 they won Best Group at the Urban Music Awards. In September 2020 they played BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Their debut full-length album, Could We Be More was released in 2022.

According to Sheila Maurice-Grey, “…with most of us being from London or just outside London, of Caribbean, West African, East African descent, I think inevitably those cultures are gonna come into it.” Percussionist, Onome Edgeworth agrees, “[In London] you just grow up with every influence in the world and so from when we let go of trying to be anything as a band, trying to be an African band or trying to be a jazz band or any of that, you just open the door to everything naturally, all of that experience.”
