Foster fans are in for a treat when popular playwright Norm Foster’s newest comedy takes the stage September 5-29 at Morrisburg’s Upper Canada Playhouse. Foster has established himself as the country’s most popular and most produced playwright. His new play Those Movies promises to be yet another comedy that theatres will rush to produce.

The Playhouse has teamed up with Orillia Opera House for a joint production of Those Movies directed by Orillia Opera House’s Artistic Director and Playhouse Associate Director Jesse Collins. Collins has been a regular at The Playhouse directing several hit productions such as The Ladies Foursome, Doris and Ivy in the Home, Moving In, The Affections of May and Halfway There to name a few. He has also created and produced such popular Playhouse concerts as Dean and Jerry-What Might Have Been and The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt.

Those Movies is the kind of show that audiences can relate to and features believable characters caught up in an awkward situation which always proves to be both familiar and hilarious. Harry and Patrick are best friends. Patrick needs somewhere to stay for a few weeks, so he moves in with Harry. Harry works at the local hospital as the north barrier gate operator and he has recently drummed up the courage to ask the south barrier gate operator, Millie Bell, out on a date.

She’s expected to arrive at Harry’s apartment any minute. Millie’s cousin Chelsea is visiting from out-of-town and Millie does not want to leave Chelsea alone at home. Suddenly the couples find themselves on a double-date. Patrick worries that the evening will unfold like one of “Those Movies” and Chelsea is going to fall head over heels for him. Is he right? Will the evening unfold like one of “Those Movies?” A heartwarming tale about how love can surprise you and be found in unexpected places…perhaps not always in the romantic sense.

As usual The Playhouse prides itself on continuing to showcase the talents of audience favourites while also introducing them to many new talents who are lighting up stages across the country. The cast of Those Movies includes Ephraim Ellis, who previously starred in The Playhouse’s production of Barefoot in the Park and was a regular in the popular TV series Degrassi-The Next Generation. Ellis is also a playwright and has had two of his plays, On The Air and Bigfoot recently produced at Lighthouse Festival Theatre and Port Stanley Festival Theatre. Joining him is Caitlin Driscoll who has also graced the Playhouse stage in its production of Where You Are. She has had extensive experience in theatres across the country including Port Stanley Festival Theatre, Festival Players, Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille and 4th Line Theatre.

Rounding out the cast are Playhouse newcomers Jeff Dingle and Brittany Kay whose busy careers have taken them to a host of theatres across the country. Dingle has performed at a variety of theatre companies including Theatre New Brunswick, Atlantic Repertory Company, St. Lawrence Shakespeare Company and Toronto’s Shakespeare Bash’d. Kay’s acting credits include Tarragon Theatre; Thousand Islands Playhouse; Shakespeare Bash’d; Port Stanley Festival Theatre; Harold Green Jewish Theatre; Lighthouse Festival and Mirvish’s The Lion King.
