One Thousand and One Drums – November 3, 2023 LiveEvents October 27, 2023 472 Orchestre Métropolitain presents One Thousand and One Drums Inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov’s overseas adventures and his ability to make an orchestra sing just as he envisioned, Scheherazade is just as enchanting as the courtesan tales from One Thousand and One Nights. Under the baton of Elim Chan, a young female conductor with international star power, the tales’ distinct colours intermingle to the pleasure of musicians and audiences alike. It may be the middle of the night, but This Midnight Hour by British composer Anna Clyne doesn’t care what the neighbours think. This immersive piece brings the audience along on a wild, melancholic, nocturnal journey. Percussionist Dominique Vleeshouwers performs the stunning Speaking Drums by Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös, where the soloist literally speaks to the snare drum, bell and other instruments with contagious glee. Artists Elim Chan, conductor Dominique Vleeshouwers, percussion The first percussionist winning the prestigious Dutch Music Prize, and winner of the first prize, the press prize and the audience award of the TROMP international percussion competition 2014, Dominique Vleeshouwers is a Dutch solo percussionist known for his virtuosic percussion skills and out-of-the-box projects. As a soloist he has performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tokyo Sinfonietta, Asko||Schönberg ensemble, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the South Netherlands Philharmonic, the Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic Orchestra, and Ural Philharmonic Orchestra among others. Highlights of his projects as a maker are Marching & Breakin’ a grand concert created for the TROMP 2018 opening night for five percussion soloists, a breakdance crew and a big wind orchestra; Visiting Beethoven for the Tracks series in The Concertgebouw, an innovative concert about Beethoven’s life. Also, Six Japanese Gardens with music by Kaija Saariaho and paintings by Marcel van Hoef, and Blurred Lines with dancer Redo. Upcoming engagements include a new collaboration with writer and booker prize winner Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, a new concept for the South Netherlands Philharmonic, a new electronic album, a multi-disciplinary project titled A new dawn: for new tomorrows and solo concerts with the Dutch Student Orchestra, Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra, Bern Symphony Orchestra. Next to his passion for both classical percussion and drums from all over the world, Dominique co-founded Combined Creatives where he and his team develop innovative and interdisciplinary concepts for the arts since 2014. Dominique graduated cum laude in 2013 from the Conservatory of Amsterdam with a project titled ‘Child Soldier’ and was awarded the AHK art prize for the most outstanding exam of all the art schools in Amsterdam. In the same year, Dominique was invited to perform a minimal live set with DJ Patrice Bäumel during the Amsterdam Dance Event. Dominique also enjoys playing chamber music and has collaborated with the Pavel Haas Quartet, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. With Ivo Janssen and the Mallet Collective Amsterdam, Dominique has performed and recorded live Simeon Ten Holt’s quintessential Canto Ostinato in a soldout main hall of The Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Passionate about working and inspiring young percussionists, Dominique was a guest professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and coached in the team of Percussion Friends at the Sweelinck Academy from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He is also the author of two marimba method books titled Time for 4 which will be published later this year. He was invited to give masterclasses internationally in the conservatories of Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Moscow, Tokyo amongst others. Dominique is an Adams artist, and his percussion instruments are supported by the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and ‘Stichting Eigen Muziekinstrument’.
