Festival du Monde Arabe presents

Roots of Strings

Unparalleled oud player and natural-born musical traveler, Nazih Borish explores new artistic paths in the company of Roberto Occhipinti and Joseph Khoury. Roots of Strings is a meeting between three virtuosos from different musical traditions who develop an original dialogue. The composer and musician Nazih Borish’s fingers dance on the strings of the oud to tell us, in his own language, his unique story.

Self-taught musician and recognized virtuoso of the oud, Nazih Borish founded his own school in his hometown of Lattakia, Syria. He draws his influences from Arabic music, flamenco, blues and jazz, which has allowed him to develop a style of play that pushes the limits of his instrument. He now pursues his career in Canada as a performer and composer alongside friends and a new family of musicians.

Nazih Borish, oud and musical direction

An indefatigably curious and versatile musician, he draws his inspiration from Arabic music, flamenco, blues and jazz, developing a highly personal style of playing that is now emulated by oud players around the world. In 2016, he moved to Canada, where he now pursues a career as a performer and composer. Nazih recently performed with such ensembles as Constantinople (Quebec), the Canadian Arabic Orchestra (Ontario) and the Rouh Trio (Jordan), and has taken part in artistic residencies at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (Culturally INappropriate, 2018, 2019) and the Centre des musiciens du monde (Nazih Borish’s Log, 2018). He is regularly invited to collaborate with artists in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and has served as a judge and special guest at international oud competitions.
