Pallade Musica – Une ville déserte

Montreal’s virtuoso baroque quartet explores Bach, Buxtehude, Weckmann, Schütz and themes of the pandemic.

This concert was elaborated in response to the current situation of global pandemic. The program, echoing the current situation, features works of Mattias Weckmann composed during the plague outbreaks in 17th century Germany. The sobriety of character paired with the extreme expressiveness of these works make them particularly poignant. The substantial Wie liegt die Stadt so wüste (The town lieth now deserted) is of particular significance for the current situation, as it describes a city deserted by cause of the plague. Weckmann even (which is unique for this period of music) provided performance instructions for this work, where he asks that the soprano and bass be positioned at some distance from each other, presumably to enhance the dialogue effect. A historical precedent to physical distancing on stage!
