Shadows and Light – February 27 to March 1, 2020 Bourgie Hall LiveEvents February 19, 2020 1414 Arion Baroque Orchestra presents Bach: Shadows and Light Among the great J.S. Bach’s many gifts was his capacity to carry us from the shadows into the light, to express the beauty of life even in the light of death. If one word could characterize his body of work, it would perhaps be “hope.” Such a path is wonderfully revealed in two of his orchestral suites, as well as in vocal works such as the ever so serene and confident cantata Ich habe genug (I am content), featuring the angelic voice of Catalan soprano Nuria Rial and the expressive flute of Claire Guimond. Hank Knox, founding member of Arion, will conduct this program, which we hope will leave you truly content. Hank Knox Guest conductor and Harpsichord – Canada Hailed internationally for his “colorful, kinetic performances,” Hank Knox performs on harpsichord in concert halls, churches, museums, galleries and homes around the globe. A founding member of Montreal’s Arion Baroque Orchestra, with whom he has toured North and South America, Europe and Japan, Knox also regularly performs and tours with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy and l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, among other groups, ensembles and orchestras. Dedicated to sharing the unique sounds of antique harpsichords, as well as fine copies of historical keyboards, he has released a number of acclaimed recordings on rare instruments, including two collections of Frescobaldi’s keyboard works on a 1677 Italian harpsichord and a collection of works by D’Anglebert performed on an upright harpsichord. Hank Knox teaches in the Early Music program at McGill University where he conducts the McGill Baroque Orchestra.
