Summertime is when Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello is at its magical bestFairmont Le Chateau Montebello – a historic family-friendly resort Peter Kerr June 29, 2019 4593 Appreciating the rich history of Le Chateau Montebello is a bonus to a getaway to this unique resort – the largest log structure in the world. Constructed in just six months by as many as 3,500 workers in 1930, Le Chateau Montebello has operated under the Fairmont resort brand since 1970, after functioning as a private club for forty years. Our recent visit was a happy reminder of how time seems to slow down from the moment you walk into the stunning lobby – with the log balconies and soaring three story roof structure dominated by the massive central fireplace. The Stanley Thompson 18-hole golf course is one of the best public courses in Canada The resort is currently undergoing a $17.5 million renovation program that will see 50% of the guest rooms being renovated this year. Two of the four wings will be completed this summer, with the first renovated guest rooms being available at the beginning of July, and the second wing re-opening in mid-September. In the meantime the classic rooms offer first-class accommodations and the amenities that you would expect from a high-end resort. The main lobby will see its renovation this coming October. The visuals of the renovated rooms and lobby are posted in the central hall. Summertime activities focus on golf, swimming, hiking, cycling, paddle boarding and a supervised children’s activity program; including movies for children in the early evening. The 18-hole award-winning golf course was designed by Stanley Thompson and follows the natural undulations of the local terrain. The fairways are isolated from each other, and the par 70, 6,034 yard course will provide a solid challenge for most golfers. The Montebello course is ranked as one of the better public courses in Canada. The Spa offers a full range of treatments including patio pedicures The Spa overlooks the river, and mixes the traditional log structure with state-of-the-art facilities. There are 8 treatment rooms, 3 manicure/pedicure stations, and a romantic couple’s suite that also includes a fireplace and a soaking tub for two, rain shower and side-by-side treatment tables. Pedicures are available on the veranda overlooking the marina and river. Summertime is when the grounds of the resort look their best, manicured lawns, flower beds and the view of the Ottawa River from the terrace. Summer is also when the resort welcomes many multi-generational families. With a huge indoor pool and lovely outdoor pool – you’re set for hours of fun in the water. Last year six private outdoor cabanas were installed beside the outdoor pool. Each cabana can accommodate up to six people, and exclusive poolside service is offered. Poolside and terrace bar service is offered to all guests. Outdoor patio dining has become very popular, and the on-site smoker enables guests to enjoy smoked eat, ribs, and brisket. Grilled seafood, burgers and steaks are also available. The Barbeque Terrace is popular for lunch and dinner The nearby Parc Omega has invested in their guest experience, and it’s a great way to see; moose, elk, bison, wolves and bears; all within their natural environment. (www.parcomega.ca) The town of Montebello is just a five – ten minute walk from the resort’s main gate, and there are some charming shops; including an excellent cheese shop that has won awards for the cheeses they have developed locally. You’ll also find a chocolate shop in the old train station. Elegant dining in the Aux Chantignoles The cuisine at Fairmont Chateau Montebello is first-rate, and consistently earns good reviews on Trip Advisor. The sumptuous breakfast buffet can set you up for a day of activities. Lunch and dinner are served on the outdoor terrace. The main dining room, Aux Chantignoles has won the prestigious Diners Choice Award by Open Table. We enjoyed a dinner in Bistro La Seigneurie – also a good choice if you’re traveling with children. And of course – there is always the option of in-room dining. There are numerous packages available for golfers, families, and romantics – plus special rates from Sunday to Thursday.
