Diego El Cigala will perform with his big band, El Cigala at Maison Symphonique on Friday, March 23Diego El Cigala: Indestructible, The Soul of Salsa The Montrealer March 17, 2018 3355 Renowned flamenco singer will heat up Maison symphonique on Friday, March 23 For his North American tour, Diego El Cigala is returning to Montreal at the Maison symphonique, on Friday, March 23, to present his new show, “Indestructible”. The show is inspired by a Ray Barretto song about a breakup that has taken on a whole new meaning since the death of Amparo, Diego’s wife and manager, in August 2015. An evening that is sure to be emotionally charged! On his last visit to Montreal in May 2015, he presented “Romance de la Luna Tucumana”, classic Argentine tango fused with flamenco, at Place des Arts’ Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. Homage to salsa legends At once sensual and raw, reminiscent of the salsa of the 1970s and 80s, he pays tribute with passion and pride to this musical style created from blending Afro-Cuban music with elements of jazz, R&B, and soul, echoing legends like Hector Lavoe and Cheo Feliciano, Francisco E. Alvarado, and Rene Touzet, as well as Ernesto Duarte and Ray Barretto, who made salsa famous. Described by late legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía as “one of the most beautiful flamenco voices of our time, a voice of sweetness that flows over everything”, El Cigala takes on a new musical journey in which he brilliantly merges his Spanish and gypsy heritage with salsa’s rhythms and intoxicating melodies, with a dose of magic and theatrics, as he does so well with his powerful, expressive, rich and emotional voice. Accompanied by Barcelona pianist Jaime Calabuch and renowned La Cali Big Band from Colombia, the cantautor will sing salsa hits like “El Ratón”, ”Periódico de Ayer” and “Conversación en Tiempo de Bolero”, interspersed with adventures in the boundless universe of Latin music: flamenco, son, tango, jazz, bolero and much more.
