MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY (New York)

Répertoire

American dance icon Martha Graham left audiences a fabulous legacy: her ballets. Martha Graham Dance Company brings that legacy forward, presenting works by Graham alongside new creations by contemporary artists.

When she founded Martha Graham Dance Company in 1926, the choreographer couldn’t have foreseen the impact she would have on 20th century art and culture. Moving away from classical codes, she redefined the vocabulary of performance. After her death, the company had to reinvent itself. Today, the Martha Graham Dance Company continues to showcase Graham’s unique repertoire, from Clytemnestra to LamentationNight Journey to Maple Leaf Rag. But the company has also commissioned works by such noted contemporary choreographers as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Nacho Duato, Annie-B Parson and Pontus Lidberg. A way to honour Graham’s spirit of ingenuity. In this evening program of several works, both established and recent, the legendary company proves that Graham’s vision is as vibrant and relevant as ever.
