Island Rhythms

Folk Music from the Canary Islands (Spain)

Germán Lopez brilliantly performs on the traditional timple, a five-string guitar of ancient origin emblematic to the Canary Islands. In a duo with guitarist Antonio Toledo, Lopez unveils with warmth and fascination the rich Canarian rhythms, tinged with jazz and flamenco.

The timple – the emblematic folk instrument of the Canary Islands. It is a small 5-string guitar of Baroque origins, related to South American instruments like the cavaquinho, cuatro and charango. Over the past two decades the timple has been the focus of a revival by noted Canarian musicians who began to place it within other styles of music.
