MAKAYA, one of Haiti’s highest mountains, is also a Montreal-based creole jazz quintet. A fusion of jazz and instrumental Creole music, their compositions showcase the traditional music of the Caribbean in a new light.

Makaya is five young musicians from Montreal sharing a common passion for the innovation and enrichment of fusion music. Their efforts resulted in mostly instrumental music which combines traditional Caribbean musical styles with jazz, without belonging in any of these genres.

Honoré Kamany, music director of Radio Jazz Plus wrote: “Makaya’s music goes beyond mere words, as these magical moments cannot be described but only experienced.”

After an eponymic first record, Makaya was nominated in 2010 for the TD Grand Jazz Award. With a grant from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, Makaya releases the album ELEMENTS in February 2016 during Montréal en Lumière, confirming its position as “a real hope in Creole jazz” – Yves Bernard, Le Devoir.
