Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 (approx. 50 min.)

Pianist Nikolai Lugansky is a virtuoso of the first rank endowed with exceptional technique and musical sensitivity. Internationally renowned, he won Second Prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994 (there was no First Prize that year). He returns to the OSM for Chopin’s Concerto No. 1, am effusion of romanticism par excellence. Tchaikovsky’s fate-laden Fifth Symphony is music of hope, enlightenment and consolation, splendidly orchestrated by one of the great melodists of all time. The concert is led by the Spaniard Juanjo Mena, who has been conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2010 and who has a large discography to his credit.
