Emanuel Ax and the Brahms First Concerto

Kent Nagano, conductor
Emanuel Ax, piano

One of the most highly regarded musicians on the international circuit, Emanuel Ax comes with truly impressive credentials, which include many prizes and acclaimed recordings. In 1987 he won a Grammy for his first recording, in which he collaborated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Four more such recorded collaborations followed. Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 occupies the mid-ground between concerto and symphony. It is a great favorite among both pianists and audiences for its virtuosic demands and poetic writing. Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony is a score filled with fanfares, hymns, rhythmic urgency, contrapuntal displays and glorious lyricism.
