The Montreal Symphony Orchestra presents

Kent Nagano: Tribute to Strauss

R. Strauss, Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24
Saint-Saëns, Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22
R. Strauss, Symphonia domestica, Op. 53

Kent Nagano, conductor
Benjamin Grosvenor, piano

Twenty-one-year-old British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is without doubt one of the most promising talents in the world of classical music today. His performance of Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 2 on his most recent CD has won high critical praise, including in the prestigious Gramophone magazine. In observance of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, the OSM performs his “orchestral monodrama” Death and Transfiguration. Many years after he composed it, as he lay dying, Strauss told his son that when he was writing it, this was how he had imagined death would be. In another masterpiece, Symphonia domestica, Strauss presents themes representing himself and members of his family in a glorious display of deeply-felt humanity.
