Montreal Big Band celebrates 50th Anniversary of John Coltrane’s masterpiece.

After opening with a sold-out concert by the great Oliver Jones on September 22nd, the sixth season of the Segal Centre’s Power Jazz Series returns in full force when Altsys Jazz Orchestra pays tribute to John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme on Sunday, October 20th at 8 pm.

This explosive 50th anniversary commemoration concert will feature some of Montreal’s best jazz musicians under one roof, in the intimacy of the Segal Studio. The product of a collaboration between composer/trumpet player Bill Mahar and conductor/saxophonist Jennifer Bell, Altsys counts among its rank such Montreal favourites as Frank Lozano (saxophone, flute, bass clarinet), Christopher Smith (Bass trombone, tuba), Jocelyn Veilleux (Horn), Jocelyn Couture (Trumpet), Jim Doxas (Drums) and Alec Walkington (Bass).

Brought together by a mutual desire to perpetuate and nurture the jazz orchestra tradition, Altsys has long since made it its mandate to revive lesser performed works: “Considered one of John Coltrane’s greatest works, this monumental piece left its mark on musicians of every genre,” says Altsys’ Artistic Director Bill Mahar. “A Love Supreme also brought an unprecedented level of spirituality to jazz music,” he adds.

The program will also include other well-known Coltrane compositions in this tribute to a true musical giant of the 20th century.

Altsys has collaborated with such distinguished artists/composers as Kenny Wheeler, Ray Anderson, Hugh Fraser, Don Thompson, Donny McCaslin Pat LaBarbera, Seamus Blake, Mike Murley, Tim Hagans and Maria Schneider, with whom the orchestra won the 1998 Prix Opus for Jazz Concert of the Year.
