Pictures in Music: European Classicism

Clarity, moderation, harmony, and balance were the defining qualities of music in the Classical period. Composed in the 18th century, the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven—sonatas, symphonies, string quartets, and concertos—all demonstrate the genius of these men in music of aesthetic purity. Formal developments in this music would lead to the flowering of Romanticism in the next century. Violinists Olivier Thouin and Marianne Dugal, violist Rémi Pelletier, and cellist Sylvain Murray will perform Mozart’s Quartet in C major, K. 465 “Dissonance” and Beethoven’s Quartet in E flat major, Op. 74 “Harp.”

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.
Before the concert, at 5 p.m. there will be a guided tour of the exhibition Classicism in European Art (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts collection)
