Salute to Vienna New Year’s Concert

Waltz into 2023 with Salute to Vienna New Year’s Concert! This dazzling performance evokes a golden age of Viennese music, brimming with energy, merriment, and romance. It is a glorious re-creation of the beloved Neujahrskonzert, the concert that has welcomed the New Year for more than 80 years in Vienna and all over the world.

Led by a witty and charming conductor who is an expert in Viennese music, Salute to Vienna brings the music of Johann Strauss to life with singers, ballroom dancers, and ballet. Backed by the Strauss Symphony of Montréal, the performance is rich with selections from beloved operettas, elegant dances, lively overtures, and the beautiful Blue Danube Waltz.

Christoph Campestrini, conductor (Vienna)

Christoph Campestrini received his musical education in New York at the Juilliard School and at Yale University. In 2016, he was appointed Kapellmeister at the prestigious Wiener Hofmusikkapelle, where he conducted the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Vienna Boys Choir, and the male choir of the Wiener Staatsoper. In addition, he is Music Director of the Klosterneuburg Opera Festival in Vienna. Maestro Campestrini has appeared with 200 orchestras on five continents, including the symphony orchestras of London, Berlin, Moscow, Mexico City, Houston, and Vancouver, as well as the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan.

Peggy Steiner, soprano (Dresden)

Peggy Steiner comes from a musical family: her grandfather was General Manager of the Staatsoperette Dresden, and her mother and grandmother were prima donnas in Berlin (Metropol Theater) and Dresden. Ms. Steiner studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, and took master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. She has performed leading roles in Der Freischütz, La clemenza di Tito, Die Fledermaus, and the title role in Countess Maritza and Smetana’s Bartered Bride, and has appeared with the Komische Oper Berlin, the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden, the Berliner Philharmoniker, and at Konzerthaus Berlin, the Dresdener Musikfestspiele, and the Rheingau Musik Festival. In 2022, she made her debut as Sieglinde (Die Walküre) and Brünnhilde (Siegfried), and will give her debut performance of Gutrune (Götterdämmerung) in 2023.

Michael Heim, tenor (Vienna)

Michael Heim began his performance career in 1998, making his debut at Theater St. Gallen in Switzerland. He has since appeared in many of the world’s finest concert venues, including the Opernhaus Zürich, Lincoln Center, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Staatsoper Hamburg, the Konzerthaus Berlin, and at the Salzburger Festspiele. During his career, Mr. Heim has performed more than 40 operetta roles and has performed in Mozart’s Magic Flute, Verdi’s La traviata, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Wagner’s Siegfried, Richard Strauss’ Salome, and Beethoven’s Fidelio.

Dancers: Europaballett (Austria)

The Europaballett St. Pölten was founded in 1998 by the Lord Mayor of St. Pölten. Artistic Director and Choreographer Michael Fichtenbaum’s expertise hails from a long and successful career dancing for the Vienna State Opera Ballet specializing in waltz choreography. He and the dancers of Europaballett St. Pölten have brought this special art to audiences in Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia, Japan, the United States, South Africa, Canada, and across Europe. It is the joy of the Europaballett St. Pölten to bring the unique charm and Viennese spirit of their dance as their performers jump and twirl backed by the musicians of Salute to Vienna.
