Wigmore Hall presents

Stuart Jackson sings Gurney, Rachmaninov and Tosti

In her role as collaborative pianist, Kathryn Stott returns to perform with a tenor whose rising status has been reflected in increasing visibility in both concert hall and opera house: having won second prize in the 2011 Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition, he has returned regularly as a recitalist. His program reflects renewed interest in the English composer and poet Ivor Gurney.

Stuart Jackson, tenor

Stuart Jackson was a choral scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, studying Biological Sciences, before completing his training at the Royal Academy of Music in 2013 where he studied with Ryland Davies.

He won prizes at both the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition and at the International Hugo Wolf Lied Competition in Stuttgart and has since given recitals for Staatsoper Stuttgart, at Wigmore Hall, at the Oxford Lieder Festival and at the Albertina Musensaal in Vienna.

This season Stuart sings his first Evangelist Bach St Matthew Passion with Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen at the BBC Proms; Haydn The Creation at the Barbican with the Academy of Ancient Music and Laurence Cummings; Handel Samson with The English Concert and Harry Bicket at the London Handel Festival; Mozart Mitridate, re di Ponto at the Royal Danish Opera, and returns to Glyndebourne Festival for Handel Alcina. In recital he sings Mahler Das Lied von der Erde for Temple Music with Alice Coote and Julius Drake; Schubert at Oxford Lieder Festival as well a BBC/Wigmore Hall lunchtime recital. Future engagements include Jupiter in Handel Semele for Opéra de Lille as well as for Komische Oper Berlin.

Kathryn Stott, piano

Kathryn Stott is internationally recognised as one of Britain’s most versatile and imaginative musicians and among today’s most engaging pianists. As well as appearing on major international concert platforms in recitals as a soloist, she is in demand for a wide variety of chamber music alliances, playing with some of the world’s leading instrumentalists. Kathryn has also directed several distinctive concert series and festivals and has developed an extensive and exceptionally varied catalogue of recordings.

Born in Lancashire, she studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music and was a prize-winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition 1978. Her teachers included Nadia Boulanger, Vlado Perlemuter and Kendall Taylor. In addition to her busy career as a performer, she is a professor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and believes passionately in nurturing young musicians to reach their potential in the creative world.

Kathryn has been performing and recording with Yo-Yo Ma for over 30 years and together they regularly tour Europe, the USA, South America and the Far East. In 2020, she curated their album ‘Songs of Comfort and Hope’ as a musical response to the impact of the pandemic. She has developed shared musical interests with an amazing array of performers and has always enjoyed collaborations with other musicians.
