Mélisande Corriveau and Eric Milnes: Bach on the pardessus de viole

A world-renowned specialist of the pardessus de viole, a clear-voiced instrument with a charming touch of fragility, Mélisande Corriveau performs works by the great Bach which, at the pardessus with its quality of transparency, admirably serves the composer’s polyphonic discourse.

Critically acclaimed for her exceptional musical mastery, Mélisande Corriveau is a specialist in the interpretation of early music as a cellist and as a recorder and viola da gamba player. In 2014, she received a Doctor of Music degree in Performance from the Université de Montréal, specializing in the smallest member of the viol family, the pardessus de viole, of which she now is one of the few specialists. According to Gramophone magazine, “[She] belongs to a new generation of players bringing formidable performing skills and knowledge of period practices.” A core member of Ensembles Masques, Les Voix Humaines, La Bande Montréal Baroque, Les Boréades, and Sonate 1704, she is constantly in demand for performances, tours, and recordings in North America and Europe. Her discography numbers over 50 titles on the Alpha, Paradizo, Zig-Zag Territoire, Analekta, and ATMA Classique labels, including Pardessus de viole and Marin Marais : Badinages in duo with harpsichordist Eric Milnes. Among other distinctions, including Radio-Canada’s Classical Album of the Year, her recordings have won numerous Opus Awards. With Eric Milnes, she is co-founder and co-director of the ensemble L’Harmonie des saisons, which won a Juno Award for the CD Las ciudades de oro, on the ATMA Classique label.

As a conductor, harpsichordist or organist, Eric Milnes has recorded over fifty CDs, several of which have received Juno and Opus awards, and have been lauded by the CBC, Apple Music, Toccata Magazine, and WQXR New York. He has conducted the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, New York Collegium, New York Baroque, Santiago Symphony Orchestra, Bande Montréal Baroque, and Trinity Consort in operatic and oratorio productions with repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Mozart. As a record producer, he received Gramophone’s Early Music CD of the Year in 2018. Milnes has been a featured performer at festivals in Utrecht, Bruges, Regensburg, Passau, Potsdam, London, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, San Francisco, and Boston, and has
presented master classes at McGill University, The Juilliard School, the Catholic University of Santiago, University of Regensburg, New York Collegium, Norwegian Conservatory in Oslo, and Bergen Conservatory. He holds degrees from Columbia University and The Juilliard School.
