Bourgie Hall presents

Jimmy and Rosalia: a folk opera

Aureas Voces will premiere a concert version (unstaged) of a new work by Nick Veltmeyer that artfully blends Baroque opera and maritime folk music. This is a love story between a shepherd boy and a young woman whose love transcends social boundaries and even death. The work is based on George Frideric Handel’s opera, Acis and Galatea, and the folk songs and stories of Nova Scotia, as collected by folklorist Helen Creighton. Handel’s opera was originally performed in a rural outdoor setting during an outbreak of the plague that closed the theatres in London.

Redefining opera culture, “Jimmy and Rosalia: a folk opera” showcases the depth and beauty of maritime folk music with an award winning all-youth cast of rising stars in early music. This unique folk opera is designed for both early music aficionados and everyone to enjoy!
