The program opens with Mozart’s sublime Ave verum corpus, after which a distinguished quartet of soloists— soprano Kimy Mc Laren, mezzo Mireille Lebel, tenor Lawrence Wiliford, and bass-baritone Neal Davies will take the stage for Mozart’s great Coronation Mass (Krönungsmesse), the most acclaimed of Mozart’s mass settings. Missa in Angustiis is Haydn’s most popular mass setting. Its nickname “Lord Nelson Mass” pays tribute to Horatio Nelson, the British admiral who led the Royal Navy to a pivotal victory over Napoleon’s fleet in 1798, the year the mass was premiered. It is a commanding work in which dense choral textures are played off against virtuosic solo voices while reserving an essential role for the orchestra. Bernard Labadie, Les Violons du Roy, and La Chapelle de Québec are always thrilled to get the chance to share their love for the choral masterworks of the Age of Enlightenment. Members of La Chapelle de Québec will hit the stage in Montreal and Quebec City with their bags barely unpacked after the choir’s Carnegie Hall appearance on the invitation of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, where Maestro Labadie is beginning his tenure as principal conductor.
