The lieder of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, while discreet in number, were nevertheless superb and foreshadowed the aesthetics and achievements of the Romantic era. For his return performance in Montreal, French baritone Thomas Dolié joins Olivier Godin in tracing the journey of the lied from Haydn to Beethoven, including a performance of the latter’s “An die ferne eliebte” as well as Mozart’s youthful and mature lieder and a few pieces by Mozart’s son, Franz Xaver.
