Le Salon des métiers d’art de Montréal

The 61st Salon des métiers d’art de Montréal (SMAM), running from December 8-18th, is a must-visit event for unearthing one-of-a-kind works of art and recognized crafts.

This unique cultural get-together allows you to meet over 450 artists and artisans, from every corner of Quebec, Canada, and France. It’s a place where artists and their audience come together.

All the works exhibited at the Salon carry the “métiers d’art” seal, which means that they meet the stringent standards of the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec (CMAQ). These objects, designed and made by artisan members of CMAQ, are made to last. In a age of planned obsolescence, the Salon is proud to present this as a guarantee of quality.

Tribute Exhibition: Monique Beauregard or Knowledge Transfer Through Textiles

This year, SMAM pays tribute to Monique Beauregard for her great contribution to the reputation of Canadian textiles around the world. Forty-six years of textile printing, 30 years of teaching, more than 30 exhibitions around the world and some 20 conferences: SMAM is proud to display some of Monique Beauregard’s work, which will be exhibited throughout the event.

Guest of Honour: La Guilde

Discover amazing works the like of which you have never seen before, a Haida ball with a modern design and striking creations by local artists. For over 100 years, La Guilde, a historical gallery and museum of Canadian art has worked to preserve, promote and spread arts & crafts. Specializing in Inuit and First Nations art, La Guilde has one of the most influential permanent collections in Canada, historically rich and culturally notable archives, a wide-ranging educational program and a gallery that brings together the works of both famous and emerging artists.

Conferences of all Kinds

This year again, SMAM offers a rich program of conferences open to the general public free of charge. These conferences will take place daily and some will be repeated for the duration of the Salon. Although some of them promise to tackle topics directly related to arts & crafts, such as wood turning with Gilles Ferragne, others are breaking out from the ordinary and deal with topics as varied as gardening (L’atelier du jardinier branché by Albert Mondor), interior design (Le coin de lecture sous tous ses angles and L’art de passer à tableby Karyne Debonville), responsible consumption (Culture bio: le Québec peut-il faire la différence? and Consommer local: un mythe, une réalité ou une absurdité? by Philippe Mollé), fashion (Le pouvoir des bagues par Claudio Pino and Le Québec, ça se porte au quotidian by Karyne Debonville) and many others!

Local and Responsible Purchasing

A visit to SMAM promises two things: human contact with a crowd of artisans/creatives and a comprehensive overview of what is being created in Quebec. In this respect, SMAM is the most comprehensive showcase for understanding the inspirations, pitfalls and successes of its artisans.

At a time when local purchasing and responsible procurement are valued more than ever, this annual get-together is an ideal opportunity for showcasing yourself or Quebec for gifts, while supporting local artists. Fans can expect to find their favourites from previous years, as well as new worthy entrants such as Baltic Club with its wreaths and greeting cards, kids’ Craie-à-tee sweaters from Sarah Couture, wooden artefacts from Le Trusquin, kitchen implements from Imagine Wood, dish cloths from Petits Mots, and tasty treats from La Cuisine par Marie-Ève Langlois… In short, you’ll be inspired and seduced by the skills and expertise here!
