Taurey Butler – a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre

Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Taurey Butler began studying piano at the age of 7. However, he didn’t find is his passion for jazz until his senior year in high school when his band director handed him a solo piano recording of Oscar Peterson. Once he listened to the recording he knew jazz would be in his life forever.

After graduating Dartmouth College with a B.A., B.E. in Electrical Engineering he decided to pursue his music career and began working at the legendary Cotton Club in New York City. Since then Taurey has performed all over the world in different venues and festivals. Some of which include The Blue Note NYC, the Detroit Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival.

Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads. Butler’s second album, released in 2022, One Of The Others features Wali Muhammad on drums and Morgan Moore on bass.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.
