Embracing AI: How Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping the Future of Work Christopher O’Sullivan, Chief Information Officer February 28, 2025 558 Imagine a workplace where mundane tasks are handled by intelligent agents, freeing employees to focus on innovation and strategic growth. This is not a distant future but a reality being shaped by the AI revolution. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to bring about a significant transformation in the workplace, akin to the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the internet. From decreased operating costs to enhanced employee engagement, AI is emerging as a driving force behind increased productivity, efficiency, and innovation across all industries and organizations. Experts believe that the “AI revolution” will lead to pervasive automation and augmented intelligence in the workplace. They envision a future where AI agents can negotiate transactions and handle routine tasks on behalf of employees, allowing them to focus on more strategic, value-adding work. The potential of AI is immense, with major impact on growth, profitability, risk management, and talent engagement within organizations. “Thomson Reuters’ reports that 77% of professionals believe AI will have a high or transformational impact on their work over the next five years.” There are significant opportunities stemming from new business models that AI will create. New ecosystems are forming rapidly, although many of them are unpredictable at this stage. Over the past several years, industries across all sectors have embraced AI, with recent surveys like Thomson Reuters’ 2024 Future of Professionals report1 indicating that 77%1 of professionals believe AI will have a high or transformational impact on their work over the next five years. Additionally, 78%1 of respondents view AI as a “force for good” in their profession, although 37%1 have not yet used Generative AI (GenAI) in their work. The capabilities of AI have advanced swiftly, with AI-powered tools like Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini being integrated into everyday productivity tasks. OpenAI’s Operator Mode and Anthropic’s Computer Use bring AI closer to working like a smart assistant, helping businesses automate tasks, interact with systems, and make work more efficient with less manual effort. These tools lead to significant time savings, as is the case with, for instance, AI-generated meeting notes, which free employees from manual notetaking, allowing them to focus on more value-added activities. A recent BDC study2 found that many entrepreneurs were unaware of the AI capabilities embedded in their existing tools. The study also revealed that small businesses are using AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve efficiency, and manage operations more effectively. As a result, 27%2 of business owners reported a reduction in operating costs, and 22%2 reported a reduced need for hiring additional employees. Larger businesses, with over 100 employees, have a higher AI adoption rate at 86%2 compared to smaller businesses at 60%2, due to their greater resources and ability to leverage economies of scale. “Contrary to common fears around AI… AI will create new opportunities for employees to add value through human relationships and critical thinking.” The integration of AI can improve employee engagement by removing menial tasks from their workload, making their work more gratifying. Contrary to common fears around AI, including job loss, AI will create new opportunities for employees to add value through human relationships and critical thinking. However, the integration of AI in the workplace is not without its challenges. There is a need for better regulation to keep pace with the rapid advancements in AI technology. Privacy and data protection remain significant concerns, as regulation struggles to keep up with the evolving AI landscape. In conclusion, AI is set to revolutionize the workplace, driving productivity, efficiency, and innovation. As organizations navigate this transformation, they must embrace AI’s potential while addressing the challenges it presents to fully reap its benefits. ¹https://www.benefitsandpensionsmonitor.com/news/industry-news/ai-to-save-professionals-12-hours-weekly-boost-productivity/387235 ²https://www.bdc.ca/en/about/analysis-research/the-ai-imperative-for-canada-entrepreneurs
