Montreal’s international video projection (mapping) festival

MAPP_MTL is proud to kick off its 9th edition of the festival, which runs from September 24 to 28 under the theme PERSPECTIVES. This year’s festival promises a festive program combining video projections (mapping) and electronic music performances, in a neighborhood party atmosphere.

ON THE PROGRAM:
Lhasa De Sela and Yves Desrosiers launch their new album at the digital block party on September 27 at the Van Horne Skatepark.
Another unique collaboration marks this edition of the festival. As part of the activities paying tribute to artist Lhasa De Sela, MAPP_MTL is joining forces with Lhasa’s family and management, guitarist, producer and composer Yves Desrosiers, and record label Audiogram to organize the public launch of the unreleased album “First Recordings”,recorded in 1994 by Lhasa de Sela and Yves Desrosiers. A public listening session will take place on September 27, the day of the album’s release and Lhasa’s birthday, at the Van Horne skatepark, located opposite the park named after the late artist. This event, open to all
and taking place at sunset, will be accompanied by videos directed by Yann-Manuel Hernandez, projected onto the emblematic surface of the Saint-Laurent warehouse, among others.

The digital block party, the festival’s flagship event, will take place from September 26 to 28 at the Van Horne Skatepark.
True to its DNA, this event features a festive program of video projections (mapping) with over 60 local and international artists showcasing their creations on the neighborhood’s iconic former store, Million Tapis et Tuiles. JS Baillat (QC/CA) Dalkhafine (FR/QC/CA), Gentilhomme (QC/CA), Karl Skene (QC/CA), Melissa Mathieson (QC/CA), Normal Studio (QC/CA), Melissa Mathieson (QC/CA), Une oeuvre spéciale Lhasa de Sela par Yann-Manuel Hernandez (QC/CA) will present spectacular works on the iconic Saint-Lawrence warehouse, while electronic music performances will be offered by Shift Radio. Festival-goers will also be able to enjoy food stalls in a friendly neighborhood party atmosphere. New this year, the event joins forces with the Montreal Skateboard Association to present an introductory skateboarding workshop for all, and a “Jam” competition for the more adept.

The Station of the Future at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on September 27
A novel collaboration comes to life at this year’s festival with the installation of the solar-powered mobile digital creation station at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. During the day, it will serve as a workshop to collect animations and drawings from the public. At nightfall, these creations will be projected to illuminate buildings in the area, creating a magical spectacle.

Interactive ping-pong tournament between digital design studios on September 25 at Moment Factory
The festival is also bringing together Montreal’s digital creativity studios and organizations in an atypical way, by offering them an interactive ping-pong tournament, where they can face off in friendly competition. The public is invited to support their favorite team and share their experiences on social networks with the hashtags #MyPreferredTeam and #MAPP2024. The event will feature a musical atmosphere inspired by the 90s.

The workshop as part of the MAPP_LAB on September 25 from 1pm to 4:30pm at Moment Factory, a laboratory on innovation and new practices dedicated to exchanges between creators and studios with the Projection and sensors – thinking about the interactive potential of projection mapping presented by Marie Martineau, Interactive Producer at Moment Factory.

MICRO_MAPP exhibition from September 24 to October 13 at Livart Opening September 24, 5pm to 10pm
For this edition, MAPP_MTL joins forces with Livart to present the MICRO_MAPP exhibition featuring artists Étienne Varin, Dalkhafine and Thaïla Khampo. The theme of the exhibition will be Perspectives, an invitation to question, to explore the labyrinths of consciousness and to embrace the infinite wealth of interpretations.

Digital murals from September 24 to November 8, 2024 from 8 pm in the Quartier des spectacles
Once again this year, the festival returns to the Quartier des spectacles with two spectacular digital murals co-produced with the Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles: one on the façade of the Saint-Laurent metro station, created by artist Dalkhafine, and the other on the façade of UQAM’s Président-Kennedy pavilion, created by Thaïla Khampo.

MAPP 2024 Festival Closing Party September 28, 10pm-3am
MAPP returns this year with its not-to-be-missed closing party at Moment Factory, featuring a festive dance program by Shift Radio with Esther Côté, Frankie Teardrop and Martyn Bootyspoon The audience will be immersed in an immersive scenography and captivating mapping projections created by the 2nd cohort of the MAPP_MTL Scenographic Laboratory.

PERSPECTIVES is an invitation to delve into the complex intricacies of multiple perceptions of reality, in a world where advances in artificial intelligence are overturning our paradigms. Our perspectives interweave, overlap and sometimes conflict, forming a tumultuous kaleidoscope of subjective truths.
