LES LUMIÈRES DE SAINT-MICHEL

Lights will be brightening up the Saint-Michel district for a second year this summer, from August 9 to 11. The TOHU team is proud to present Les Lumières de Saint-Michel, in collaboration with the Fonds de solidarité FTQ. On the program for these three days of completely free activities: a big nighttime parade, a floodlit race in Parc Frédéric-Back, free music performances by KNLO and Afrotonik, circus entertainment, a number of illuminated activities, and much more.

A Dazzling Program for the Entire Family

Friday, August 9: The Party of the Summer in the Saint-Michel district
On Friday, starting at 5:00pm, TOHU will be welcoming visitors with a variety of activities. Beginning at 6:00 pm, participants get to transform themselves with fluorescent face paint at the self-makeup station, just in time for an evening set to music courtesy of the DJs of Afrotonik, who’ll be accompanied by dance and percussion performances until 11:00pm.

Also setting its stamp on the evening will be La Foulée Illuminée at 7:00pm, a walk-or-run event in Parc Frédéric-Back with 2 km and 5 km courses, organized in collaboration with the Frédéric-Back ParkRun. Interested parties can sign up on the TOHU website by way of the box office. The day will end in grand style: the awarding of door prizes, the intergalactic performance “O.V.N.I.” (UFO), and luminous juggling starting at 9:00pm.

Saturday, August 10: Le Grand Défilé Lanternes, the weekend’s flagship event
On Saturday night, don’t miss the big nighttime parade, which will set off at 8:15pm from the corner of Rue de Louvain and 9e Avenue. Citizens, proud bearers of their own lanterns built at springtime workshops, will be accompanied by spectacular light installations and percussion ensembles. The 500 citizen-created lanterns will have an escort in 15 large lanterns designed by a team of visual-arts and set-design students exclusively for this parade. The 2.4-km route will take spectators through the Saint-Michel district and Parc Frédéric-Back for a festive, participatory experience.

The evening will continue under the TOHU tents with shows by Alaclair Ensemble member KNLO and by Nacho con Salsa, promising a vibrant end to this second day of festivities.

Sunday, August 11: A Family Day
On Sunday, festivities will kick off at 11am on the TOHU site. At 11:30am, the show “Guillo – Qui se balance” will delight young and old alike, followed by urban-dance performances and workshop at 1:30pm by Forward Movements. The day will wind up with a bang thanks to the show “Mystéric enlève son masque” from 3:00 to 4:00pm under the Grand Chapiteau (big top).

On Friday and Saturday, visitors will be able to enjoy illuminated projections with Station de l’avenir, a concept of MAPP MTL, Montreal’s projection mapping festival, an organization well-known in the projection world.
