Biennial ELEKTRA – Illusion – through July 21, 2024 LiveEvents May 31, 2024 396 Biennial ELEKTRA – Illusion The 7th edition of Biennal ELEKTRA addresses ILLUSION, a reflection on the post-factual, post-truth and alternative reality era of current society, a subject that is shaking up the news. Indeed, the proliferation of digital communication technologies and tools from artificial intelligence (AI) contribute to disinformation, notably deep fakes. This denial of reality is already negatively impacting the lives of billions of people and even more problematic consequences are to be expected. Created in 2012, the Biennale ELEKTRA is the largest exhibition of digital contemporary art in North America, taking place until July 21, 2024. “In our post-factual era, the proliferation of digital communication technologies and now the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is making a major contribution to disinformation and upending the news in 2024. The denial of reality, particularly through deep fakes, perpetuated by certain politicians toward a large part of the population slows decision making on critical issues, particularly when it comes to the environment and social issues, and will have a major impact on future generations. It is now essential to address the alternative reality that is leading to the parallel realities in which many people currently live. This 7th Biennial, once again, reflects on our increasingly digitally infiltrated and saturated societies.” – Alain Thibault, curator for the ILLUSION exhibition and artistic director for ELEKTRA. The Biennale ELEKTRA brings together 41 works by 36 artists from three continents. At Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal in Griffintown, in a converted 19th century shipyard, the public makes its way through 18,000 square feet of exhibition, to question the very existence of certain works, due to their ephemeral, immaterial or even invisible nature, shaping their own definition of reality or illusion. Visitors are invited to question the very existence of certain works, due to their ephemeral, immaterial or even invisible nature, on the basis of a necessary, unfailing credulity towards the artist.
