Festival du Monde Arabe presents

Myriam Beldi

The rhythms of chaabi take flight, its melodies resonating with the surprising yet irresistible sounds of rock and groove, held aloft by a strikingly feminine spirit. Snippets of French verse emerge and blend harmoniously into the whole, resulting in a unique and intoxicating experience that elevates this popular Algerian genre to new heights!

Singer Myriam Beldi and composer-musician Ptit Moh are shaking things up with their innovative style that’s as authentic as it is daring! Their music conjures moments of pure wonder—sometimes exhilarating, sometimes bittersweet—but always fully charged with heartfelt emotion.

With her velvety, soulful voice, Beldi is one of those rare female artists who dare to sing chaabi, a traditionally male-dominated genre. Her work with the talented composer and mandolin player Ptit Moh has inspired her to push back boundaries, freely appropriating classic Algerian repertoire while respecting its essential elements. Their unique approach injects a gentle breath of modernity into chaabi and French chanson while staying true to the roots of both genres, for music that feels familiar and natural. This new show, never before seen in Montreal, provides a fresh take on established traditions, combining styles in innovative and thrilling alchemies.
