Mendelssohn’s Dazzling Italy

An ardent Mozart admirer, Tchaikovsky paid him homage with Variations on a Rococo Theme, a work of irresistible charm and elegance, throughout which the cello declaims with astonishing eloquence. Mendelssohn returned from his trip to Italy bearing a multitude of sketches, which he reimagined in his radiant Symphony no. 4, a work driven by the sprightly rhythms of the saltarello and tarantella.

German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt is one of the most sought after and versatile artists today. As a soloist, conductor, and artistic director, he performs repertoires spanning early music to contemporary, on both period and modern instruments. Since his highly acclaimed debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival, he performs regularly with the most renowned orchestras around the world. As a chamber musician, he performed in many festivals in Europe. The 2022–2023 includes debuts with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer as well as on tour in Australia, the United States, Europe and with the Seoul Philharmonic conducted by Osmo Vänskä. As a conductor, he will make his debuts with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic and Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. Nicolas Altstaedt is Artistic Director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, and of the Haydn Philharmonic at the Ésterházy Palace. He has received numerous prizes, and his most recent recording for the Lockenhaus Festival garnered the BBC Music Magazine 2020 Chamber Award as well as the 2020 Grammophone Award.

La Virée classique 2023 celebrates its 10th anniversary. Since its creation, the Virée has become an unmissable summer event. The mission of the Virée classique is to promote the discovery of music in all its forms, to strengthen social ties in the community, to contribute to the development of the sensitivity and curiosity of music lovers, and to encourage amateur musicians and young emerging artists. This mission has been fulfilled successfully year after year.

For this 10th edition, 26 indoor concerts and a hundred or so free activities for the whole family will allow you to explore a multitude of musical universes, from the great classical works to Balinese music, as well as jazz, film music, music from the Balkans or the Middle East. From different cultures, this music will evoke memories of travel that will lead you into the fantastic world of tales.
